What is Prednisolone?

Prednisolone is a synthetic analogue of the hormones cortisone and hydrocortisone. The drug causes significant anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, anti exudative, antishock, anti-toxic effects. Anti-inflammatory effect of prednisolone is achieved mainly associated with cytosolic glucocorticosteroid receptors. The complex between the hormone and the receptor penetrates into the nucleus of the target skin cell enhances expression of the genes that code synthesis of lipoproteins, the substances which inhibit phospholipase A2 and reduce the synthesis of metabolic products of arachidonic acid cyclic known to participate in inflammatory reaction.

  • Antiallergic effect of the drug is explained by its ability to decrease the number of basophils and inhibit synthesis and secretion of biologically active substances. Prednisolone is used to treat many different conditions such as allergic disorders, collagenosis (skin conditions), infectious nonspecific polyarthritis, psoriasis, lupus, ulcerative colitis, bronchial asthma, acute lymphoblastic and myeloid leukaemia, neurodermatitis, eczema, Addison disease (decreased adrenal function), and many others.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Prednisolone?

Prednisolone is an adrenal cortex hormone, also called a corticosteroid. Adrenal cortex hormones inhibit inflammation and hypersensitivity reactions. They are also needed to release and store energy, minerals and salts. Look at all the different types of Prednisolone here.

  • What to do if you miss a dose?

Ask your doctor what to do if you forget a dose. Usually the advice is as follows:

    – If you are taking this medicine once a day: will it be more than eight hours before you take the next dose? Then take the forgotten dose. Will it be less than eight hours? Skip the forgotten dose.
    – If you are taking this medicine several times a day, take the forgotten dose as soon as possible. Is it already time for the next dose? Ask your doctor what to do in that case. In some cases you can take both doses at the same time. This depends mainly on how high the dose is that you are taking
    – If you take this medicine once every 2 days: take the forgotten dose the next morning. If you do not find out until after 2 days when you need to take the next dose, skip the forgotten dose. Then skip the forgotten dose.

  • Can i suddenly stop with this medicine?

Have you been taking this medicine for a long time in a row and suddenly stop? If so, you may experience severe symptoms such as headaches, muscle aches, tremors, dizziness, heart palpitations, diarrhea, nausea, weakness, and feeling lame. These symptoms occur because your own adrenal cortex has started to produce fewer hormones during use. After all, there is already enough adrenal cortex hormone in the body. If you stop suddenly, the adrenal cortex cannot start producing the hormones all at once. Look at all the different types of Prednisolone here.

  • What are other types of diseases where this medicine is used for?

In inflammatory diseases, it is used in different ways: in a high dose for a few days to weeks (shock treatment) and in a lower dose for several months (long-term treatment). Doctors usually prescribe it as a shock treatment. Prednisolone is also used to counteract rejection reactions after organ transplants and as part of treatment for cancer. It is also used to supplement a shortage of the body's own adrenal hormones (as in the adrenal diseases Addison's disease, Cushing's disease and adrenogenital syndrome). When used in this way it is called substitution therapy.
