Alprazolam and/or Xanax is taken in the form of tablets. You take these with a glass of water or food. Always use alprazolam exactly as your doctor or pharmacist prescribes. If in doubt about the proper use, always contact your doctor or pharmacist.

The usual dosage is:

• Adults
  The starting dose in adults is often 0.25 to 0.50 mg at a time. You take the tablet three times a day (24 hours). If the effect is insufficient, the doctor may increase the dosage to a maximum of 3 mg per day in several doses.
• Aged and weakened patients
  The starting dose in the elderly and weak patients is usually 0.25 mg at a time. You take the tablet two to three times a day (24 hours). If the effect is insufficient, the doctor may increase the dosage to a maximum of 0.75 mg per day in several doses.

You will normally be given a prescription for up to four weeks. Never use alprazolam longer than the doctor prescribes and certainly not for more than two months. With long-term use, you run the risk of becoming too dependent on the drug. In general, treatment lasts no longer than eight to twelve weeks, including the tapering of alprazolam. Never stop alprazolam just like that, but always make sure you reduce the dose gradually in consultation with your doctor to prevent relapse.

Dose of alprazolam forgotten?

If you forget a dose of alprazolam, stick to the following:

• When taking two or three times a day: never take a double dose. Swallow the tablet if you need to take the next tablet at least three hours later. Is there less time in between? Skip the forgotten dose.
• For ééone tablet a day: take the forgotten dose if it is more than eight hours before the next dose. Skip the forgotten dose if there is less time in between.

Alprazolam overdose

Have you taken an alprazolam overdose? Then contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. An overdose can cause symptoms such as drowsiness, confusion, and sleepiness. In severe overdose, you may also experience coördination problems in the form of decreased muscle tone, drunkenness, and suppression of breathing. Rarely to very rarely, an alprazolam overdose results in coma or death.
