Zolpidem belongs to a group of medications used for insomnia; called Z sleep pills. A brief technical story of how it works: the medication targets – like benzodiazepines (such as buy xanax) – receptor cells in the brain that respond to a specific amino acid called GABA. This neurotransmitter affects your sleep cycle, your emotions and your state of consciousness.

How does Zolpidem work?

Zolpidem is absorbed quickly and almost completely. Due to a first delivery clearance (‘first pass’ effect), the bioavailability is 70%. Maximum plasma concentrations are reached after 30 to 60 minutes. Chronic use and use by the elderly (65-95 years) do not show a different pharmacological profile. Zolpidem readily passes the blood-brain barrier and is also rapidly redistributed into the circulation. Hence, the effect sets in quickly (after 12-25 min) and is of relatively short duration (approx. 6 h).

  • Zolpidem is 95% bound to plasma proteins and the excretion half-life is 1 to 4 hours. None of the metabolites, which are formed by the liver, show hypnotic activity. Of the metabolites, 48-67% are excreted renally and 29-42% fecally. Repeated administration does not change the half-life of zolpidem.
  • The various studies indicate that zolpidem shortens the sleep latency time, prolongs the total sleep time, and shortens the periods of wakefulness during sleep. The hypnogram shows an increase in deep sleep.27 The number of sleep cycles increases without disruption of the different sleep stages. However, at doses above the recommended dosage of 10 mg/day, the amount of REM sleep may decrease.

The use of zolpidem also makes it more difficult to drive a car properly. Naturally, this increases the risk of (causing) a traffic accident. This is not a coincidence. Most sedatives slow down your reaction time and reduce the influence you have on your coordination. That’s why we want to once again urge you not to take this drug longer than what your doctor recommends. This should not be longer than four weeks.

Before we wrap up this article, we also want to remind you again about the possible interactions. This can occur in combination with other medications, agents or even vitamin supplements (natural or otherwise). So always follow your doctor’s instructions and watch out for possible, unexpected side effects. If you experience these, you should inform your doctor immediately. Do you want to know more?
